TV Industry Blog 3, Question 2 (Feb. 16th)

Which two streaming services offer, or are developing, the best original TV series content? Which streaming services would benefit from creating more original content? Finally, do you think the streamers will eventually replace linear TV or continue to be a complementary/supplemental service for the majority of Americans?  Limit: 9 responses

In my opinion, the 2 streaming services who are developing and offering the best original TV series content are Disney Plus and Netflix. Unlike some of their competitors, they take their original content to the next level. Disney in particular has a lot of resources going for themselves currently thanks to the Marvel and Star Wars franchises. It goes far beyond just having all of the movies easily accessible. They have so much potential with shows thanks to sheer number of supporters for each of these franchises. Star Wars proved easily proved this with the overwhelming support of the Mandalorian. As stated by Allie Gemmill of the Collider, this series has already received quite a few Emmy nominations in its first season alone (Gemmill). As we found out from last week’s ratings, the Mandalorian racked up over 1 billion total minutes of watch time according to the Nielson ratings. It was the first time a non-Netflix show reached number one. People live for this type of content and many new shows have already been planned for both Star Wars and Marvel. Going back to Gemmill’s article, she states that Marvel is set to launch shows such as The Falcon and the Winer Soldier and Loki (Gemmill). Meanwhile, Star Wars is set to release shows on Obi Wan Kenobi, Ashoka Tano, the Bad Batch, and many more. If the Mandalorian is any sort of indicator for potential viewership, both Marvel and Star Wars originals have chance to put Disney Plus on the top. For Netflix, they’ve been creating original hit shows for a while now. They have the ability to put a large budget into their projects, which often gives them a high and appealing quality. According to Travis Clark from Business Insider, the number one most viewed original series on Netflix is season 1 of The Witcher where it managed to grab over 76 million views (Clark). Its fantasy appeal plus it being based off a popular video game makes it a good watch for multiple audiences. There’s also shows such as The Queen’s Gambit, Tiger King, and Stranger Things which all got over 60 million views. Every show in the top 10 has over 40 million views (Clark). With all of these viewership numbers and high ratings, it goes without saying that Netflix is one of the best streaming services for producing popular original shows.

In my opinion, Hulu could greatly benefit from having more original shows on their platform. While I understand it is not as easy to produce them given their lesser budge compared to Disney and Neftlix, people on a budget might feel more inclined to use them as their primary streaming service if they were to add more unique content. As stated by Isabelle Kagan from USA Today, Hulu’s cheapest subscription plan is $5.99 a month if you are willing to have ads (Kagan). The only major streaming service with a lower subscription cost is Peacock at $4.99. For some people, every dollar counts. Money can’t just be thrown around so any opportunity to save is one they’ll likely take. If Hulu were to offer more original entertainment options, that might be enough value for those who are willing to watch ads. As a bonus, some people might be willing to get the higher subscription cost without ads if it means they get access to a specific shows that they are desperate to watch. Netflix has hundreds of originals on their platform. Hulu needs more originals to keep pace or at least make their service sound more appealing. I see streaming services eventually becoming a replacement for linear TV. It’s a more appealing option for many thanks to the endless entertainment options along with the way cheaper prices and convenience. However, I still believe we are a long way off from streaming services taking over. There are still many adults in this world who will refuse to switch because cable is what they’re used to. I believe that streaming services will still be a supplemental form of entertainment for another for at least another decade or so. As the newer generations become the older people, I think we’ll see a shift. The traditional source of entertainment will be streaming services. It is what future generations of kids will be brought up on. I see a world where cable loses their number one status one day for sure.

  3. In 2020, Netflix has reached 203.7 million paid subscribers worldwide, which makes it one of the most used streaming platforms in the world. Netflix has a wide variety of TV shows, movies, anime, documentaries, and more content that you could find at a low monthly price (Netflix).
The challenged factor among companies in the movie industry has been the original content that is produced, owned, and distributed by a particular media company. And Netflix is winning at attracting new subscribers by creating original content. Its original content has been a key factor of their success. It is clearly the leader in the number of originals it develops and distributes to its subscribers. Netflix focuses on what its audience are watching, what they like and that is how they develop new content. It also makes sure to target the right audience, the most used audience, which is a demographic age of 18 year olds to 50 year olds. But also expands to older generations (Socialnomics). In 2020, the top 10 original series streamed were mostly from Netflix, which include Ozark, Lucifer, and Crown as top 3 (Nielsen). But the only original series that was not made from Netflix, was made by Disney+. The Mandalorian was placed number 5 in the top 10 most streamed original series (Nielsen). Disney+ is a new streaming service platform which is growing by the day. Subscribers have the possibility to watch movies and TV shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, 20th Century Fox, and its original content as well. I believe if Disney+ continues creating more original content, which they are planning to, it will benefit them a lot. Because of the originals they already had from all of these years, if they made spinoffs of their old movies and shows, it will definitely attract more people as they can feel nostalgic. For example, Marvel fans were upset that the Avenger movies were finished, but with new content like the new show Wanda Vision or The Falcon and the Winter Soldier coming out, it will attract this kind of audience to watch them (Collider). I believe Netflix will also still be at the top of most watched original content. As we can see, Bridgerton, a show that came out in late 2020, was watched by 63 million households in its 28 first days. Netflix also renewed a lot of TV shows for new seasons that people have been waiting impatiently for. (aka me)

In my opinion, Linear TV will disappear sooner enough because of how many people use streaming services and not cable. As of 2020, the percentage of the total number of scripted original series on broadcast or cable have gone down of 7 percent from 2019. This was probably caused by the pandemic (Hollywood Reporter). And as the pandemic is still alive, it will for sure fail at making more and good quality content. As stated, media conglomerates like WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal have found ways to create streaming services like HBO Max and Peacock, which would mean that people are leaving the linear TV service and are joining the streaming world (Hollywood Reporter). This will make the linear TV disappear at some point and be replaced by streaming services.

Currently, the streaming services with the best original content are Netflix and Disney+. Before even looking at the statistics provided, I tried to think of the most impactful and popular content given to us by streaming companies in the past couple of years. For Netflix, so many titles flooded into my mind. “Stranger Things”, of course, was large. “Bird Box” and “Tiger King” both dominated the world when they were released, generating an abundance of memes. I have so many other favorites, like “Sex Education”, “Lucifer”, and “The Queen’s Gambit”. All of these range from mini series, to regular television shows, and even full-fledged films.
Next was Disney+, a company that has promised an endless amount of entertainment that is soon to be released. Investors’ Day promised a new world of original content that was targeted to fans of all kinds. There are Star Wars and Marvel shows in store, sequels to classic films, and even products that will have niche audiences, like the “Chip and Dale” project they promised with John Mulaney and Andy Samberg cast as the title roles. Disney+ is ready to beef up its library of work that is only exclusively available to the streaming service.
All other streaming services came as a second thought. The only original content from Hulu I could think of was “The Great”, a show that only one of my friends watched. For HBO, I thought of the television show “Euphoria”, but I had never personally seen it, as I don’t have a subscription to that streaming service. And finally, I did watch “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “The Boys” on Amazon Prime, but nothing else interested me from its library recently.
After looking at the numbers, it seems my instincts were correct. According to Nielsen, Netflix dominated in the original content section. 9 out of the top 10 belonged to Netflix (Nielsen). Only “The Mandalorian” rivaled these numbers, which is possibly a glimpse into how future Star Wars and Marvel content will perform. No other streaming service entered the ranks.
And when breaking down all original content and comparing the streaming services, “Netflix has 1.7 times more original content than the other paid streaming services combined” (Wheelwright). It has made 63.5% of all original content across all streaming platforms. When reported in July 2020, Netflix created 461 original pieces, the most of any network. In second came Amazon Prime with 91. And at that time, the now-dominant Disney+ had barely even started. It owned 17.
However, according to Variety, HBO Max made headlines when its original show “The Flight Attendant” got two Golden Globe nominations (Otterson). So other streaming services are still making their mark in the industry and being recognized for their work. While Disney+ already has recognizable characters that fans of all ages are attached to, Hulu and other streaming services do not. It is imperative they begin to produce more original content that is enjoyed by different generations.
Overall, I don’t think this will dramatically overtake linear television in the near future, especially with so many streaming services being released. Many people may feel overwhelmed and find it easier to use cable now. Cutting the cord could feel more expensive now, and while I feel competition is good for the market, it will damage these streaming services in the long run and make cable seem favorable.

I believe that Netflix and Disney+ are leading the way in the best original TV series content. To name a few of Disney+ original content TV series are "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" and "WandaVision." One iconic original TV series Disney+ has created is "The Mandalorian." As Otterson mentioned, "The Mandalorian" has proven to be a worldwide phenomenon, capturing the attention of "Star Wars" fans both young and old. The show was previously nominated for 15 Emmy Awards for its first season, of which it won seven (Otterson). Disney+ will be going nowhere but up in the coming years with original content stemming from past television shows to shorts and movies that are new or renditions of the classics. What will set Disney+ apart are the announcements following the Disney Investor Day in 2020. Disney+ plans to have new content launching weekly (Gemmill). Weekly streaming of new episodes is significant as it can revert streaming services to linear TV with a new episode each week versus the norm of binging a show with streaming services releasing an entire season in one day.

Netflix original TV series like "The Umbrella Academy," "You," and "The Witcher" exceeded well past expectations upon their release, which began from content like comic books, novels, and video games. Netflix still is coming out on top, holding nine out of the top ten spots on the Top Streaming Content of 2020 – Original Series chart. The black sheep of the group was "The Mandalorian," falling in at number five. (Nielsen). Netflix continues to stay on top as Netflix can provide a broader range in genres, whereas Disney+ faces to remain in the realms of Disney, Lucasfilm, Marvel, etc.

I feel as though Hulu can benefit from more original content. The only original content I can think of from personally watching is "The Act," "Castle Rock," and the documentary called "FYRE FRAUD." Despite Hulu having the option of add-ons like sports and other entertainment networks, they lack original content. With many networks beginning to pull their original content, Hulu needs to take the reins and begin to produce more original content if they want to stay in the streaming service ring.

I believe that streaming services will replace linear TV. Many networks have started in the transition, such as Peacock, who now stream their original content like "The Office." I recently saw a commercial for a show called "Kenan." The commercial added that the episodes would air on linear TV and stream on Peacock the following day. According to a Statista chart, in 2019, 24.6 million households aren't paying for traditional TV services in the United States. It is projected that by 2024 the number will almost double to 46.6 million (Stoll). I still believe linear TV will be around, but the idea of spending more on cable or add-ons will go out the window. The viewers now have the freedom to pick and choose what streaming services they will invest in their household.

Streaming services are beginning to be judged not only on the wide range of shows and films they make available, but also on their ability to produce new, original programming. In order to compete in the increasingly competitive market, a service should aim to produce a range of new shows that will help maintain a diverse audience. As of right now, the streaming service that is creating the best original shows is Netflix; they are producing new shows at a high rate and in a diverse range of genres for various target audiences. This can be seen by the information from Nielsen’s ratings for the week of Jan 11-17 in the article “'WandaVision's Premiere Makes Nielsen's Streaming Top 10.” Eight of the ten top original shows were Netflix (Bridgerton, Cobra Kai, Night Stalker: The Search for a Serial Killer, Lupin, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Disenchantment, The Crown, and Virgin River) while the other two were Disney (Porter, 2021). The high rank of the two shows by Disney, The Mandalorian and WandaVision indicate that Disney+ should be considered second to Netflix for the quality of original content (Porter, 2021).
However, Disney+ is the streaming service that I believe would benefit the most by developing more original content. Although two of their shows are extremely popular, they have only recently started adding original TV shows and cannot compete effectively with Netflix (Gemmill, 2020). From the information in the article “Disney+ Says 10 New Star Wars Series and 10 New Marvel Shows Are Coming Soon,” Disney also seems to be emphasizing the production of new content based on the Marvel and Star Wars franchises (Gemmill, 2020). I think it would be a good idea to develop programming to appeal to audiences who are interested in different types of shows; lack of diversity in content is one of the reasons I will not be renewing my subscription.
Looking at the article “Tops of 2020: Television” (Nielsen, 2021), it seems that streaming services and content are unlikely to replace live TV programing. Although there was an increase in the amount of streamed content people watched in 2020, the Nielsen rating showed that live sports’ broadcasts were still the most popular TV programming; eight of the top ten single telecast programs were sports events (Fox Super Bowl LIV, Fox Super Bowl Post Game, Fox NFC Championship, Fox NFC Playoff-SUN, AFC Wildcard Playoff, AFC Divisional Playoff-SA, CFP Championship L, and Fox NFC Championship POST) and the top regularly scheduled program was NBC’s Sunday Night Football (Nielsen, 2021). Live news programs were also still drawing large audiences. I agree with the article’s assessment that sports and news will be the focus of live TV audiences and that viewership for other types of programming is likely to shift to streaming services. This means that live TV will not be fully replaced by streaming, but that certain types of content may eventually shift from one to the other, as people watch more TV shows such as dramas, reality TV, and classics via streaming services while keeping live TV for the purposes of watching news and sports.

When it comes to the streaming services that offer the best original series, it is Netflix far and away number one, then followed up by Disney Plus. Netflix is far and away from the best because of the massive variety of original shows they have. I feel that it is virtually impossible not to have one Netflix original that you like. According to Nielsen, in 2020, nine out of the top ten original series were from Netflix, except the Disney Plus and the Mandalorian. (Nielsen) And you have to believe that trend is only going to continue with shows like Cobra Kai, Stranger Things, and many other big shows having their new season come out. You can tell that Disney Plus is doing well because they own Marvel and Star Wars, which allows them to air huge shows like the Mandalorian and 2021s biggest show so far, Wanda Vision. Disney is incredibly aware of this, and hence why they have greenlit ten new Marvel shows and ten new Star Wars shows. A big goal of Disney in the upcoming year is to be putting out new content every week "The goal, Disney says, is to have new content launching weekly on Disney+. That is a big change from the slow path originals have had on the service so far." (Gemmill) As you can see, Disney has massive plans for the future. When you look at Amazon Prime and HBO max, while they aren't as good as the other two big streaming companies, they are getting much closer to them. HBO max needs to get more original shows like Flight Attendant, which is their best to date, and when it comes to Prime, they have two big hitters in The Boys and Marvelous Miss Maisel, but as with HBO Max, they need a lot more variety and options. As streaming is becoming more popular by the day, fewer people are using a cable provider because the joint bill of streaming services will be a lot cheaper than a monthly cable bill. Even with the high prices, though, it is just really hard to believe that streaming will 100 percent kill off the cable, and that's because of living sports. Big sports fans hate watching sports on delay, especially if there are betting on games and have a lot of money on the line. According to a piece from moneyunder30.com, most of tv cable companies are saved by ESPN "If you subscribe to a standard cable package, a pretty significant part of your bill is for ESPN, regardless of whether you know a field goal from a first down." (M30) No matter how much streaming impacts the tv world, cable TV will always be a place. Honestly, it is ok to enjoy cable and streaming services, and they are both out there for a reason.

I believe that Netflix and Disney Plus are the two streaming services that offer the best original content among the others. HBO Max is using a different tactic by releasing all their movies around the same time on its streaming platform as opposed to a TV series. Also, you have other streaming services such as Peacock who are trying to jump start their platform by obtaining the rights to popular shows such as “The Office''. Netflix has been relying heavily on its own original content because other streaming services end up taking back the rights to their movies to put up on their own streaming service. Some Marvel movies were on Netflix for a while, but once Disney Plus came out those movies were taken off Netflix after their time on there expired and were put on Disney Plus . Because of this, Netflix had to come up with something to rival these other companies for them to continue their success. Shows like “Stranger Things'' and “13 Reasons Why” are examples of Netflix originals that have proven to be very popular among their subscribers. Disney Plus is the other service that has benefited from creating their own original content as well. I think where they will succeed the most is from their Marvel shows. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is arguably one of the most successful movie franchises of all time and now adding original TV shows into the series to go along with their movies is something that many people subscribed to Disney Plus for. Disney had its investor day over the summer where they announced so many things that would come out on its platform. In the article “Disney+ Says 10 New Star Wars Series and 10 New Marvel Shows Are Coming Soon” it says that “In a preview of what was to come later in the call, Disney exec Kareem Daniel announced plans for 10 new Marvel shows and 10 new Star Wars shows at the top of Disney Investor Day. In addition to the plans for even more new Marvel and Star Wars content, Daniel also announced 15 new live-action/animated Disney and Pixar series, and 15 new live-action/animated Disney and Pixar movies. This news was also confirmed shortly afterward on the official Disney Twitter account.” (Gemmill)

    1. “The Mandalorian” is one of Disney’s original series on Disney Plus that has been a huge success especially since many Star Wars heavily criticized the sequel trilogy. There are many Star Wars that hate the new movies, but seem to give positive reviews to “The Mandalorian”. In the article “Golden Globe Nominations: Disney Plus, HBO Max Break in as Streaming Wars Heat Up,” it says that “The Mandalorian” has proven to be a worldwide phenomenon, capturing the attention of “Star Wars” fans both young and old. The show was previously nominated for 15 Emmy Awards for its first season, of which it won seven.”(Otterson) One of the highlights of the show is the Luke Skywalker cameo which made a lot of Star Wars happy to see the iconic character again. Netflix has its own shows that it relies upon for success. “Bridgerton” is one of their newer shows that has had success. According to the article “How Netflix's 'Bridgerton' Compares to the Streaming Giant's Biggest Original TV Show Hits,” it talks about how “Netflix is projecting "Bridgerton" to be watched by 63 million households in its first 28 days (it debuted on Christmas), the streaming giant said on Monday. Netflix counts a view if an account watches at least two minutes of a show or movie, so while the metric doesn't account for how many users watched the entire series, it does provide a good idea of how many were interested in it.” (Clark) Even with the emergence of new streaming services, Netflix is still finding ways to stay relevant with increased competition. I think in the short-term streaming will continue to operate beside TV. I do think in the long term that streaming will become the new normal and regular TV will become irrelevant. In the NFL they began to stream games on Amazon Prime with one game being streamed exclusively on that streaming platform. I think as time goes on there will be more of these instances occurring and with the Pandemic still going on, companies will continue to use this time as an experimental period for the future.

I think that Netflix and Disney+ are the top two streaming services with the best original TV series content. I initially thought of Netflix before reading any of the articles provided for me and because I am obsessed with Netflix for my own reasons being “The Queen’s Gambit,” “Ozark,” “You,” and of course, “Stranger Things.” All of these Netflix originals had me hooked and they were advertised extremely well. The numbers speak for themselves too, for example, Netflix’s original “Ozark” was binged almost 30.5 billion minutes across 28 episodes in 2020 (Nielsen). That’s a crazy number of views and I feel that if a show like “Ozark” isn’t the one for you there has to be some original that is. All of my roommates are hooked on at least one Netflix original. According to Nielsen’s “Tops of 2020” article, nine of the top ten original series were from Netflix (Nielsen).
As for Disney+, I believe that their niche is the feeling of nostalgia their content gives you. It’s great for children and families, as they always are producing new content for this category, and it’s also good for the young adults who want to relive their childhood. Disney+ focuses on their own original content while also featuring the Marvel and Star Wars movie franchises. This is why they are so popular because not only do they have the best original content, but they also own Marvel and Star Wars which has a huge fan base and gives them more subscribers. Disney’s Investor Day announced the promise of multiple new Marvel and Star Wars shows coming to Disney after the success of “The Mandalorian.” It was stated by Allie Gemmill that “The Mandalorian” has already racked up multiple Emmy nominations for its first season (Gemmill).
In my opinion, I think that Apple TV could really benefit from more originals, as the only notable show I can think of is “The Morning Show” with Jennifer Aniston. Although, I do feel this assumption is a bit biased because of my love for Netflix and Disney+. With that being said, I do suggest that they advertise their top original series more because when I looked at the article titled, “All Apple TV+ shows and movies ranked by Tomatometer,” the first six that came up were under the drama genre. As a result, I think they should go on to produce more original content under different genres. Doing so could attract a wider audience and might even put them in the Top 5 for streaming services since they currently aren’t on the list according to Business Insider.
Streaming services will eventually replace linear TV. Especially now with COVID happening, people want something to binge-watch on a streaming service more than ever. Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ are a big factor in keeping some people sane right now. It really is a perfect way to pass time when secluded from the world (depending on how you feel about COVID). Even Nielsen says in his article that “the aftermath (of countrywide lockdowns) reflects a permanently altered media landscape, with video streaming accounting for a larger share of overall media consumption than in previous years” (Nielsen).

In the beginning of the streaming era, Netflix was for movies, and Hulu was for television. Now, with the addition of so many new services, everyone is fighting for all the best movies and tv shows. If you want to be a streaming service that competes against the rest of the giants, then you need to be well-rounded.
In my opinion, Disney+ has the best original TV series content by far. Disney+ released and had plans to debut a new Star Wars series called the Mandalorian almost instantly. It was a huge success and put Disney+ directly into the thick of the competition of the TV series wars between the streaming giants. Disney+ also just released the first series to the start of Phase 4 of the MCU called Wandavision. This twisted series is gripping fans back into the MCU after the thrilling finish of Avengers: Endgame.
When season 2 of The Mandalorian ended, Disney revealed that it was releasing a spinoff series called the Book of Boba Fett releasing in late 2021. Also, according to an article on Collider, this year The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and possibly Hawkeye are all Marvel series’ that will be released on Disney+ giving subscribers plenty of content to keep them stuck to Disney+ for a long time (Gemmill). Kareem Daniel, Disney executive, announced via Twitter plans for 10 new Marvel series and 10 new Star Wars series (Gemmill). He also stated that Disney+ will plan to start releasing content weekly, which is a big difference from competing streaming services (Gemmill).
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think HBO Max could use a boost when it comes to creating original TV series. I love HBO Max, and I think it ranks close to the top in terms of overall streaming services, but the series are all shows I’ve seen many times. All of the series currently on HBO Max like Game of Thrones and The Sopranos are masterpieces, but I’ve seen them a few times already.
According to an article on The Hollywood Reporter, HBO Max is bringing back their hit comedy series from the 90’s, Sex in the City. This is directly related to the Disney+’s Mandalorian release. Having big name titles like Star Wars and Marvel will give any streaming service a good start. Adding onto those titles is what will keep your viewers that bought the service because of those titles in the first place interested (Goldberg). So, if HBO Max creates a spinoff of their previously most popular series, then they can expect their subscribers to be drawn to a title like that.
I’m not sure if linear TV will be completely replaced by streaming services, but I do think it’ll take a big hit, and it’ll have to adapt. 2020 showed that people still like to watch their news via linear TV. Although Fox News once again finished at the top of the news channels in primetime which shows no difference, but the difference is that its viewership increased 45% (Johnson). However, the top-rated overall cable network of 2020 is ESPN, with 680,000 viewers during primetime (Johnson). Based on the volume of the viewers, I do not think streamers will completely replace linear TV just yet.
